Having said that, I feel that without these painful elements, it would I always stajdish a book that makes me feel a whole spectrum of emotions and this novel did all that and more. Concerns a wealthy aristocrat who inherited an ill-gotten estate and the rightful owner’s son. The words Erastes strings together cascade and collide almost unobtrusively, creating fireworks of associations that explode on the page. I am not a big reader of romance novels not the regular kind, anyway so Rafe is still a fairly fresh name for me and I thought it suited the character. It has romance in it, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it that. Once Ambrose ran away the story picked up; it got much better.

But then Rafe Goshawk, the current owner of the estate, who is precisely the sort of cold, saturnine, rakish conveniently widowed fellow you would expect of a romantic hero returns to Standish to live, bringing with him his beloved son. While a love affair is at the heart of this story, it is not really a romance novel; the plot is much darker and complex.
