During his lifetime, Fernando Pessoa, using one of his many heteronyms fictional names of writers with points of view and literary styles different from that of Pessoa’s of Bernardo Soares wrote his thoughts and feelings on sheets of papers or even napkins and put these writing in one box.

I see that the Penguin classic version of the book has pages, while the Serpent’s tail version of pesssoa has only pages. I’ve become a character in a book, a life already dead. I was perfectly happy with the quality of the text in the version I read plus I love the cover! Richard Zenith includes not only fragments Fernando Pessoa didn’t want in, but also author notes, and letters to friends concerning the book.

Ultimately, I sense that this is a philosophical work, rather than a fictional work. The man sitting in that cafe is a wonderful guy with deeply philosophical thoughts. I admit, parts of his desasoziego appealed to mine.

It’s a viable defense mechanism for a lot of people, and I find that, usually, those who can be self-deprecating in a humorous way are some of the most “centered,” emotionally healthy people I know.
