Awkwardly Ever After Smith High. On the surface these characters are a bit stereotypical and familiar, but Bates does a wonderful job of making them engaging and relatable. She is like every teenage senior out there. Marni Bates is a great YA contemporary writer.

Mackenzie Wellesley has spent her life avoiding the spotlight. Suddenly, I’m the latest sensation, sucked into a whirlwind of rock stars, paparazzi, and free designer clothes. They are all equally likable.


Mackenzie is the most endearing marnk I think I’ve ever encountered. It’s always fun to see how authors infuse their baets with local flavor, and I hoped for some fun familiarity. I have to say my favorite part of the book was a line you will see used through out the book.

Corey is a funny, impossible to not like character. I thought it cleared up a lot about where Mackenzie’s life was going to go through a cool plot device. Seriously, I won’t mind. When not writing in front of her air conditioning unit, she can be found rollerblading, bargaining at garage sales, reading romance novels, and watching copious amounts of TV—strictly for artistic inspiration, of course.

I like that the author didn’t go overboard with teenage mistakes. She doesn’t get why her crush of four-years suddenly seems abtes. She’s now getting nice clothes, being invited to parties, invited to give comments, and even getting backstage passes to see the hottest band, ReadySet.
